with Captain W. F. Raynold's is one of the to visit. Devils Tower became the nation's first National Monument in 1906. Do you know where the name came from? Back is 1875, Colonel Richard Irving Dodge
misinterpreted the name as "Bad God's Tower". Later, people just shortened the name to Devils Tower. About 400,000 people come to visit the Devils Tower every year. Some of these folks try climbing up to the top. Take this opportunity to actually climb these sheer faces. A little rock climbing lingo could come in really handy here.
Most geologists agree that Devils Tower is the result of intense heat, as volcanic rocks crystallized from molten magma. Others think that it is the neck of an old volcano. The columns were created as the lava cooled off. The columns became narrower as it continued to cool off and cracks were formed. The surrounding softer sandstone eroded away from Devils Tower leaving it to protrude. Since it was created from the harder volcanic rock, it did not erode like the surrounding sandstones and shale. Continued erosion is expected, mostly to the land surrounding the monument itself. There has been some erosion of the Devils Tower as well, and this activity is also expected to continue. Although science does a good job of trying to explain the origin of Devils Tower, Many people still enjoy the other stories surrounding the making of this unusual sightseeing attraction.

One of the Indian legends says that six Sioux girls were picking flowers one day. Bears began to chase them. The Great Spirit felt sorry for them and raised up the ground beneath them. The bears tried to climb the rock, but kept sliding down, scratching the sides of what is now Devils Tower.
Another similar legend is about two Sioux boys that strayed from the village. A huge creature called Mato the bear, saw them and went after them. The boys prayed to the creator Wakan Tanka for help. The ground rose up to form a huge rock as Mato tried to climb up after the boys. He left huge scratches along the sides of what is now Devils Tower. An eagle named Wanblee, helped get the boys back to the village from the top of the huge rock. The fireplace at the visitor’s center has a painting by Herbert A. Collins hung that portrays this scene at Devils Tower.
