If you have ever taken a really long ride, you may already know how sore the bottom can become. Many riders are familiar with Iron butt. Some riders even compete in Iron butt competitions where they have to ride a certain number of miles in a predetermined amount of time - Ouch!!

The ones that are placed on a new bike are not usually made for comfort. Stock ones are not great for long rides. Many riders swap it out shortly after buying the bike. After market seats are an option. The custom ones can be a little pricey, though. A couple of favorite brands available are Mustang and Corbin.

When riding on a longer tour, the last thing you want is a sore bottom. A sore rear can take away from an otherwise pleasurable ride. There are things you can do to avoid the purchase of motorcycle seat pads. Changing your position along your ride can help. Shuffling positions on the ride, however can be annoying and dangerous.

Your size and amount of natural padding makes a difference. Thinner riders experience more pain. The larger folks have a definite advantage, but they also suffer from soreness on the long rides. The blood needs to flow even through the sitting area. Blood circulation through the affected area can become blocked. When the blood stops flowing, numbness sets in and pain soon follows.

Several different types are available. They are made from different materials.

  • Foam - Foam can still be found, but many riders don't like them. You are basically just adding another layer of hard foam to the one already there. They can help, however to raise your body if you have trouble seeing over the windshield.

  • Sheepskin - Sheepskin motorcycle seat pads are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They insulate pretty well and have good ventilation. They don't hold up very well in the rain, though. If left in the rain, they can start break apart and become ruined.

  • Bead - Wooden ones actually work pretty well. They circulate the air, keeping your bottom cooler. The distribution of pressure helps distribute the pain. The pain tends to move as you wiggle around.

  • Gel - Most riders agree that these are the best kind. Sitting on one of these is like floating on water. The only downside is that they don't breath well, so can get warm. Just toss it in the 'fridge, and it can be kept colder (at least for awhile).
