Snowshoe Mountain is a beautiful ski resort in West Virginia nestled in the Allegheny Mountains. Why not go skiing on your sightseeing adventure? Surrounded by the Cheat and Back Allegheny mountains, the beauty is hard to resist.

Rise to almost 5000 feet in elevation upon one of the highest places in the entire state! Cheat Mountain reaches an elevation of just over 4800 feet! Snowshoe Mountain is perched nicely on top of Cheat itself.

It started out as a logging community. Snowshoe Mountain was opened as a skiing paradise in the late 70s. Thomas "Doc" Brigham thought it would be a good place for a ski resort, and was he ever right. Names of the slopes like Skidder, Ball Hooter, Grab Hammer, and J-Hook remind you of the logging background.

The Allegheny is part of the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States. They travel about 400 miles from the Northern part of Pennsylvania all of the way to the southern portion of Virginia. The Appalachians were once known as "Allegheny". Back in the early 1800s, John Norton used the word to describe the mountains in Tennessee and Georgia. The earliest people to settle in the Allegheny Mountains were the Eastern Woodland people.

If you have time to explore the Alleghenies, be sure to check out Blackwater and Cheat canyons, along with some of the Georges like Shenandoah Valley and New River Gorge. 

Beyond skiing, you can also enjoy a ride through one of the trails on a bicycle near Snowshoe Mountain. You can also take in a game of golf if you are visiting during the summertime. Enjoy the warmth of the Village perched at the summit itself. Many other similar resorts place the lodge and cabins in the valley and lower elevations, but not Snowshoe Mountain!

Most of the almost 500,000 skiers that come here hail from the southeast, but even if you are a little farther from Snowshoe Mountain, it is still worth the trip! Be sure to have the right gear for your ski adventure. Lightweight ski poles really makes a difference.

If you really feel the need for speed, try one of the 1500 foot vertical drops at Snowshoe Mountain. Take either Shay's Revenge or Cupp run and hold on to your hat! A little experience will come in handy on these. There a number of slopes to choose from. Pick any of the nearly 60 trails or slopes for your skiing fun.
