The name comes from the red sandstone formations, formed by the shifting sand dunes. The rock formations seem to be ablaze in the reflective rays of the sun. Elephant Rock is one of the more popular formations. The rock formations in the Valley of Fire State Park include limestone and shale. You can go rockclimbing or hiking in the Valley of Fire. The rough floor and jagged walls contain brilliant formations of eroded sandstone and sand dunes that are over 150 million years old.

Two areas that are easy to access are Mouse's Tank and Atlatl Rock. These two areas have several petroglyphs. Many of the Animals in the Valley of Fire State Park are nocturnal. Animals can be seen mostly at night. Some of the animals that can be seen include lizards, snakes, coyote, kit fox, spotted skunk, black tailed jack rabbit, and antelope ground squirrel.

Prepare for extremely high temperatures in the Valley of Fire State Park. Temperatures can reach as high as 120 degrees. Winters are mild with temperatures ranging from 32 °F (0 °C) to 75 °F (24 °C). Daily summer highs usually exceed 100 °F (38 °C). Summer temperatures can vary widely from day to night.
Have you ever camped in a desert environment? Camping is available in designates places. All campsites are first come, first serve. There are two campgrounds. Campsites are equipped with shaded tables, grills, water, and restrooms. RV sites are available for a small additional fee. Hiking is the Valley of Fire State Park is challenging. Be sure to bring the correct gear as well as large quantities of water. Many parts can only be seen while hiking in the Valley of Fire State Park.
